Best Graphic Novels of 2011

Books in graphic format are becoming a more prevalent part of school library collections. All kinds of readers love these books. Next year, we may even see a graphic novel win the Bluebonnet award! This is definitely an area of literature for children and young adults that we need to pay attention to.

Zita the Spacegirl is nominated for the Texas Bluebonnet Award this year.
Yesterday, Library Services hosted the ABC-CLIO/Linworth webinar on graphic novels. The presenter was Michele Gorman, "Getting Graphic" columnist for Library Media Connection. Michele shared her picks for the best graphic novels of 2011. If you missed the session, you can download the handout here. It includes my notes from the session and curriculum connections for some of the titles listed. Enjoy!

Skype with an author

from the TLC listserv...

Here’s a very cool opportunity for those of you wanting to connect kids to author but without the funding to bring someone in to you school. Andrea White, author of Surviving Antarctica, has started a program called VIVA-Virtual Interaction with Visiting Authors and is willing to Skype with your students about the writing process and her new book, Windows on the World. No charge. Email her at Her Skype name is andrealferguson.

Grant opportunity

The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) offers a grant that provides author visit to a school that cannot afford one. Called the Amber Brown grant in honor of Paula Danziger, the SCBWI chooses two schools each year to receive an all expense paid visit by a well respected author or illustrator.

Applications are due by April 1.

See the SCBWI web site for more information.

Texas Bluebonnet Award update

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Texas Bluebonnet Award program this year. We had 3,592 students who read at least 5 books and were eligible to vote.

That's 17, 960 books read by students in grades 3-6. Fantastic!

The top five vote getters in MISD were:

1st -  The Case of Origami Yoda
2nd - Goal!
3rd - The Buddy Files: the Case of the Lost Boy
4th - Mirror Mirror: A Book of Reversible Verse
5th - Out of My Mind

The official winner was announced on the TLA website this morning. MISD students were right in line with all of the other kids who voted for The Case of Origami Yoda, the Texas Bluebonnet Award winner for 2012.

Here's a video from Tom Angleberger, the winning author. Should be a fun time at the Bluebonnet luncheon this year!
